Bio

Elizabeth Thayer was born and raised in Utah, U.S.A. She always loved to draw and paint; however, it wasn't until college that she developed a passion for creating art -- specifically for storytelling and figurative/portrait work. She finished a BFA in Illustration at Brigham Young University, then studied both Illustration at Syracuse University, New York, and Painting at UNC Greensboro, North Carolina. Subsequent moves to Washington D.C. and then abroad brought new perspectives and challenges. Learning to survive and then thrive in new environments gave Elizabeth added appreciation for cultures different from her own, and more empathy for the minorities of society. In 2006, she helped found a nonprofit organization focused on telling the stories of individual refugees through art, and she contributed a number of artworks to the effort. Hearing the stories of people who come from different cultures, and yet being able to connect with them as fellow humans, has changed her life and her view of what humanity is, and could be. Her first solo show, “In-Humanity” (2018), was a compilation of portraits she created and stories she gathered in person from refugees.

Elizabeth’s experiences have deepened and informed what and how she creates. She believes that art has power to cross boundaries and connect people in unique and meaningful ways. By telling stories that are individual, relevant, and relatable, we teach each other empathy and enlarge understanding.

Elizabeth has enjoyed teaching art both to children and university students. In addition to studio work, she paints commissioned portraiture. She currently lives in the United States near her favorite mountains, with her husband and six children.
